The Association is committed to providing an outstanding experience for all participants at its events. We strive for full access to the activities of these events and accommodations relating to mobility, hearing, vision or other areas may be provided. We ask that requests for reasonable accommodations at the event be made as early as possible, and well in advance of the event, so we may explore options to best meet the individual’s need or provide a resource/suggestion to help meet the individuals’ requirement.
Potential Barriers: Although we strive to make this event as accessible as possible to all members, some barriers may remain due to financial, logistical, facility, vendor or volunteer/staffing limitations.

Abstract
This presentation offers a practical overview of evidence-based practice (EBP) in speech-language pathology. It highlights what EBP is, why it matters and why it can be challenging to implement. Attendees will learn a clear process for forming clinical questions, finding and appraising research and integrating evidence with clinical expertise and client needs. The session introduces accessible tools—such as ASHA evidence maps, SpeechBite and The Informed SLP, and uses real examples to illustrate how EBP supports effective decision-making, avoids ineffective practices and helps clinicians confidently navigate gaps in the literature.

Presenter Information

Heidi Miller, MS, CCC-SLP, is a writer for The Informed SLP. She is a second career speech pathologist who started as a special education teacher before pivoting to speech language pathology. She works at UVA Health Children’s where she has worked both in the acute care inpatient wards and now primarily supports in the outpatient setting. She currently serves as the President-Elect for the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia. Her areas of clinical interest are pediatric dysphagia, early language, parent/caregiver coaching. She’s likely to be found outside of work hanging out with her daughter, reading, hiking, or planning her next big vacation.

Satisfactory Completion Requirements:
Certificates of completion will be awarded after active attendance at the entire presentation, submission of a completed evaluation and submission of a completed assessment of learning. There is no partial credit. A link to the online assessment and evaluation will be provided.
