School Licensure in Indiana

Two public agencies license SLPs in Indiana

1. The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA) https://www.in.gov/pla/
2. The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) https://www.doe.in.gov/

You must have a license from the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA) to practice as an SLP in the state of Indiana. Some school systems may also require a license from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). You may use a current IPLA license to seek and maintain a school IDOE license.

Step 1

• Finish Graduate School
• Register as a Clinical Fellow with IPLA: https://www.in.gov/pla/files/Updated_CFY_INSTRUCTIONS.pdf

Step 2

• Apply for your IDOE license: https://www.doe.in.gov/licensing/communication-disorder (choose “Original Communication Disorder”

Step 3

Upon completion of your Clinical Fellowship Year

• Apply for your IPLA license: https://www.in.gov/pla/3712.htm
• Renew your IDOE license as indicated: https://www.doe.in.gov/licensing/communications-disorders-slp-licensure
• If you maintain your IPLA license, you can use it to renew your IDOE school license as often as needed: https://www.doe.in.gov/sites/default/files/licensing/renewing-valid-ipla-sbs.pdf

IPLA also licenses SLP Support Personnel in Indiana

• Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Disorders)
• Speech-Language Pathology Associate (must hold a 2-Year Associates Degree in Communication Disorders)
• Speech-Language Pathology Aide (must have at least a High School Diploma)

Support Personnel must be supervised by a licensed SLP (supervisor cannot be practicing under an Emergency Permit)
