Position: Speech and Language Pathologist

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The position is expected to assist South La Porte County Special Education Cooperative in achieving its vision and mission. Customer focus, community service and a willingness to assist as needed are expectations for all SLPCSEC employees.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The South La Porte County Special Education Cooperative Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) provide prevention, assessment, and remediation services for students who exhibit difficulties in the areas of language, speech, voice, pragmatics, fluency, and oral motor skills that adversely affect their educational progress.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assure compliance with established local, state, and federal laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Establish a screening program for speech and language services.
- Conduct assessments and analyze results to determine strengths and concerns in the areas of speech, voice, fluency, pragmatics, language and oral motor skills.
- Use evaluation results to determine eligibility and appropriate recommendations.
- Submit reports which meet local and state guidelines.
- Provide guidance to colleagues for the development of language-related goals and activities through the RTI (response to Intervention) process.
- Participate in the multidisciplinary team process regarding eligibility, Individual Education Plan (IEP) development, provisions, and service delivery models.
- Implement building/therapy schedules.
- Instruct individual students or groups of students for the purpose of implementing goals for the remediation of speech and language deficits.
- Accountable for student status through the use of charts, records, progress reports, etc.
- Accountable for maintenance and preparation of a wide variety of manual and electronic materials (e.g. charts, logs, records and/or reports) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information; and /or complying with mandated requirements.
- Employ instructional materials and/or equipment that are appropriate for meeting each student’s goal and objectives.
- Consults with parents, administrators, teachers, colleagues and support staff for the purpose of providing requested information, or developing plan for services.
- Participate in staff, speech and parent meetings, professional development opportunities for the purpose of receiving or conveying information related to speech and language.
- Assess, select, and develop and maintain a variety of therapeutic equipment aids and devices including augmentative and /or alternative communication systems and provide training in their use
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of any assigned staff. Adhere to state law regarding the type and amount of supervision required for licensed speech language pathology assistant(s).
- Comply with Medicaid regulations and reimbursement requirements and activities.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Supervisor and/or Director of South La Porte County Special Education Cooperative.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders from an accredited program or university.
- Completed field work under the supervision of an ASHA-certified SLP
- Current license as a SLP issued by the state of Indiana.
- Demonstrate communication and interpersonal skills needed to engage and communicate in a tactful, sincere, effective manner with parents, school staff and administrators, and students.
- Ability to work with a high level of independence and professional discretion.
- Commitment to collaboration and effectiveness in working within a professional learning community.
- Evidence of continuous professional learning and a commitment to participate in professional growth opportunities and self-reflection on professional practice.
Terms of Employment:
Approximately seven (7) hours per day, one hundred eighty-nine (189) days per year. This position is considered to be an exempt position under the terms of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and as such the employee filling this position is not entitled to compensatory time or other compensation for hours worked over and above the regular thirty-five (35) hour work week. The salary for this position is established by the Superintendent and the Board of School Trustees.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job is evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of School Trustees’ policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel. A SLPCSEC administrator will conduct the evaluation of this position.
