Abstract: Deficits in cognition result in decreased efficiency and effectiveness of communication. Cognitive communication deficits can have a significant impact on participation in society, but may go unassessed and untreated. Research evidence illustrates improvement of deficits and participation in society following speech language services when certain instructional techniques are employed. This presentation will review current assessment and intervention techniques for individuals with cognitive communication deficits following acquired brain injuries. Specifically, awareness, attention, memory and executive functions will be discussed, with a focus on assessment and instructional strategies to manage these deficits and improve participation in society.
