Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) is just days away, but it's not too late to get involved. Here is what ASHA has in store this May:

2021 Theme and Weekly Focus Areas

The 2021 BHSM theme is "Building Connections." It's particularly relevant after a year of living in a pandemic environment-which made clear the critical importance of human connection and challenged us all to find new ways to connect. ASHA will focus on these topics where ASHA members build connections every day:

    • Week 1 (May 3–8): Lessons Learned on Hearing Loss-Turning Pandemic Realities Into Action on Hearing Health. After many months of masking, social distancing, online meetings, and more, it's time for the public to take stock of their hearing health and seek care from audiologists, if necessary. Look for news announcements the week of May 3rd!
    • Week 2 (May 10–15): Early Intervention and COVID-19. Early intervention referrals and enrollments are down nationwide, according to the latest data. However, early is still best-families who delayed an assessment due to the pandemic will be encouraged to take action now.
    • Week 3 (May 17–22): The Role of Health Care SLPs in COVID-19 Recovery. During this week, ASHA will spotlight the role of health care SLPs as critical partners in care for COVID-19 survivors with cognition, communication, and swallowing problems-both short- and long-term-across health care and residential settings.
    • Week 4 (May 24–29): Summer Reset for School-Aged Children. Following a year of virtual, hybrid, and modified in-person learning, it's time to engage children in language, literacy, and learning activities in fun, low-stress ways. Summer will also be a good time to focus on hearing protection for school-aged children, given the time they've spent in virtual learning sessions (with accompanying earbuds and headphones, for many).

For each topic, ASHA will have customizable press release templates for members to use with their local media (see tips for doing this sort of outreach here), social media shareables, and printable handouts that can be posted, linked to, and otherwise shared within your community. Be sure to check www.asha.org/bhsm weekly.

    Speaking Up For Communication

ASHA will once again offer its popular BHSM social media contest, Speaking Up For Communication. Over 5,000 members are already signed up to participate. The program allows members to easily celebrate BHSM on their personal and professional social media accounts. Sign up (it's free), and you'll receive 2–3 shareable graphics via email per week that you can post to your accounts with one click. Nothing is shared without your approval. For added fun, ASHA will award one $50 Amazon gift card each week via a random drawing of participants. Become a BHSM Champion: Sign up to Speak Up throughout the month of May! Visit asha.socialtoaster.com to get started.

    Free Resources

We've got the free resources you need to make BHSM festive for your workplace, from posters to Zoom backgrounds. Visit www.asha.org/bhsm to download these materials.
