Hello, This is Jennifer Freeman your Indiana ASHA State Advocate for Medicare Policy (StAMP).  I wanted to share the following PowerPoint from our last conference call because it explains about appropriate use of the billing treatment codes for cognitive treatment.

    Cognitive Code Training-1 (1).pptx

The presentation was prepared by Lisa Milliken, the Texas StAMP.  The next StAMP call is Tuesday, February 7 and the topic is development/impact/transition to alternative payment models, the creation of bundled payment/episode of care, and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).

Please let me know of any specific trends or difficulties your company is experiencing with Medicare.  I would be happy to bring our concerns before Sarah Warren, Director of Health Care Regulatory Advocacy with ASHA and the other StAMPs.

    Advocating for Indiana,

    Jennifer Freeman MA CCC-SLP

First, thank you for your time and attention to this request.  My name is Brittany Ratliff and I am a speech-language pathology student at East Tennessee State University.  I am completing a master’s thesis as a capstone project under the supervision of Dr. Brenda Louw and Dr. Kerry Proctor-Williams.  I invite you to take a survey about the presence of children who are known or suspected to have a history of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) on school-based SLP caseloads. The purposes of this study are: (1) to determine if SLPs in the school system have known and suspected children with NAS on their caseloads, and (2) to examine SLPs’ experiences about the presentation of communication and any comorbid disorders in this population.  We feel that school-based SLPs are in a position to provide a unique perspective on this population. With RTI, children on SLPs’ caseloads tend to have more severe communication disorders and include many children with comorbid neurodevelopmental disorders.

This questionnaire is intended for master’s and doctoral level, ASHA certified, school-based SLPs working in the United States.  The procedures, which will involve you as a research subject, include completing this survey that will take approximately 15 minutes of your time.  Participation in this research is voluntary.  You may refuse to participate.  You may stop at any time.  If you stop or decline to participate, there will be no consequences.  For questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me, Brittany Ratliff, at  You may also contact my supervisors, Dr. Louw ( and Dr. Proctor-Williams ( regarding this project.  This research has been approved by the IRB of East Tennessee State University.  You may contact the ETSU Institutional Review Board at (423) 439-6054 for any questions you may have about your rights as a research subject.

By completing this survey, you have acknowledged that you have read this information and have agreed to participate.

    Please connect to the link:

    Thank you for your time!

FDA Announces Immediate Changes Regarding Medical Waiver Requirement

    for Adults Purchasing Hearing Aids

On December 7, while providing comments at the National Academy of Sciences meeting on Hearing Health Care for Adults, Dr. Eric Mann, Clinical Deputy Director at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), announced that, effective immediately, the Agency no longer intends to enforce the requirement that individuals 18 and over receive a medical evaluation or sign a waiver prior to purchasing most hearing aids. Dr. Mann’s comments were followed by a formal release and the issuance of a guidance document containing more information. This guidance is effective immediately. The Academy has long advocated for this change and applauds the FDA for their decision.

New regulations that went into effect July 18, 2016 will require audiologists and speech-language pathologists to review and update their nondiscrimination policies to ensure compliance with the Office for Civil Rights’ Nondiscrimination in Health Programs and Activities final rule. The rule expands on existing policies that protect patients against discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex or disability. To learn how the new requirements may impact you, be sure to register for the free live online chat “Update on New and Existing Nondiscrimination Requirements for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists in Healthcare Settings” scheduled for Monday September 12, from 6:00pm-7:30pm ET (open to ASHA members).

To support and empower members to provide the highest quality, life changing communication,
swallowing and hearing services to the people of the State of Indiana.
